INTRODUCTION

Hello, this is David Liebman. I am writing this introduction to my web site from my home in the Pocono Mountain area of Pennsylvania, about one and a half hours from New York City in the United States. I'd like to welcome you to my home page, giving you a short description of the content. I have spent many hours on this and want to thank Evan Gregor for all his help through the years and Scott Fabian for hosting the site.

The online newsletter, "Intervals"  is something I update every month or so, and includes upcoming itinerary, comments and other matters of interest, as well you can review my recent past activities by clicking "older posts" at the bottom of the page. There is of course the biography and an interesting chronology of the various groups I have lead and recorded with since the early 1970s after my apprenticeship years spent with both Miles Davis and drummer Elvin Jones. The present David Liebman Group includes Vic Juris on guitar, Marko Marcinko on drums and Tony Marino on bass; the David Liebman Big Band is conducted by Gunnar Mossblad and comprised of established New York musicians. On the most recent discography section you can click on tracks to hear from my latest CDs, as well as read some liner notes and reviews. The complete discography lists all of my recordings from my entire career with the year of recording as the guide.  Under saxophone / chromatic master class there is news about the upcoming session which I hold every summer at East Stroudsburg University in Pennsylvania for advanced jazz players.

Educational articles have been written over the years and are included in various periodicals, liner-notes, and journals covering a wide range of subjects. The International Association of Schools of Jazz is an organization that consists of jazz schools representing over 40 countries from every continent, which I founded in 1989 and am presently serving as Artistic Director. Here you will see news of our most recent IASJ meeting as well as be able to link to the IASJ main page for membership information. You can also read Online Interviews with me conducted over the years.

The Private Tapes features live unreleased tracks recordings which may be of historical interest to you. Video Clips give the web addresses for clips with Miles Davis, Elvin Jones and my own bands presently available on You Tube and Google. Photo Gallery features pictures with other jazz artists, various present and past groups I have performed with as well as photos of personal interest. Photos For Press are for anyone interested in downloadable 300dpi pictures. The Past Newsletter Archive documents my activities and comments on a variety of subjects since I have been publishing Intervals from 1993 through the present.

Links will put you in touch with people that I have been or are associated with at present. Special Features is where articles and comments that are of interest and not part of any of the above categories. CDs / Books features all of my published materials and CDs available through

HOW DOES IT FEEL TO PLAY: LIKE "LE ROI DU MONDE"

"What does it feel like when you are in the vortex, the eye of the hurricane? To me it is aptly put by the French; you are (at least temporarily) "le Roi du Monde."  For those moments when you are playing in front of the rhythm section, you are the king of the world; everything is perfect; you are in control; you can do whatever you want within the territory you are living in at the moment. Better than sex, better than anything-cause you are a master of the universe...not the cliche.. the real deal! Getting to that place takes years of experience and looking up at those who are there already. There is a confidence, an unseen swagger, an assertiveness(even if the music is gentle). It's so good, all you want is to repeat it... like  a junkie...hooked forever. "
